Eco-Friendly Company

Through Green Metal
Production

Korea Zinc plans to gain a competitive edge with Green Metal in a global market where carbon emission regulations, such as carbon taxes, are strengthening, and to lead the ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) standards in the non-ferrous metal industry.

Green Metal

Korea Zinc aims to produce 'Green Metal', which does not emit carbon throughout the entire life cycle of the production, and is setting up a production base to minimize carbon emissions throughout the refining process. As part of Korea Zinc’s Troika Drive for new growth momentum, one of the strategies is to produce Green Metal through renewable energy and hydrogen production, creating eco-friendly competitiveness.

Global environmental regulations are increasingly strengthened to minimize various environmental impacts throughout the entire process of raw material production, use, and disposal of products. Korea Zinc conducted a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impacts generated throughout the entire product process.

LCA assesses the environmental impact of products quantitatively, from raw material extraction and production to product manufacturing, use, recycling, and disposal. Among these, the numerical value converted to carbon dioxide, which affects global warming, is referred to as the carbon footprint.

Korea Zinc's products, used as intermediate products for producing other items, represent the carbon footprint from raw material extraction and production to product manufacturing (Cradle to gate).

In 2023, Korea Zinc completed the calculation of the carbon footprint based on the PAS2050 standard for zinc, silver, and copper cathode, with the goal of low-carbon Metal production to proactively respond to global environmental regulations. It obtained certification from the Carbon Trust's Product Carbon Footprint (PCF).

The carbon footprint will be utilized for Korea Zinc's low-carbon production strategy, compliance with global regulations and standards, and may contribute to the company's financial performance through green premiums for low-carbon products, enhancing both environmental competitiveness and financial results.

Efforts for
Green Metal Production

RE100

Korea Zinc has been striving to achieve the eco-friendly future value of 'Green Metal' by reducing the use of fossil fuels in the zinc manufacturing process and increasing the utilization of renewable energy.
Korea Zinc's subsidiary in Australia, SMC, was recognized for its leadership in carbon neutrality by becoming the first zinc refining company worldwide to join RE100 in 2021. Following SMC's footsteps, Korea Zinc, as the parent company, also became the first in the domestic metal industry to join RE100, continuously strengthening its capabilities to become the most environmentally friendly and competitive company.

Renewable Energy

SMC receives approximately 25% of its total electricity supply from renewable energy through a solar power project constructed in 2018. With continuous introduction of renewable energy such as wind power, SMC plans to increase the proportion of renewable energy to 85% by 2030 and 100% by 2040. Moreover, by aggressively expanding its eco-friendly portfolio including renewable energy and green hydrogen projects, SMC aims to produce 100% Green Metal through Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050.
