Since 2017, Korea Zinc has set sustainability management as three major management policies along with strategic management and talent management, and is establishing detailed plans every year. In order to achieve the goal of eco-friendly management, Korea Zinc aims to become an eco-friendly company through minimization of pollutant emissions, environmental improvement, environmental evaluation, and development of eco-friendly technologies. We are doing our best for conservation activities.

Eco-friendly management policy
Korea Zinc has been collecting and implementing environmental policies that take into account the environmental impact of local communities since 2010. We are managing to systematically implement environmental strategies and action policies in five key areas, including participation and strengthening the foundation for ethical management. All organizations and members of Korea Zinc are striving to create an environment where nature and people can live together through sustainable development that harmonizes development and conservation. We intend to actively promote environmental management by setting better goals for ourselves and conducting continuous improvement activities such as regularly reviewing them. In addition, Korea Zinc evaluates whether or not to establish a clear environmental management plan and to deal with and prevent major environmental aspects when evaluating suppliers.

- Monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions
- Korea Zinc manages greenhouse gas emissions in close cooperation with the business sites and the head office.
- The organization in charge and each operation line manages the greenhouse gas of the business site and monitors the CO2 emission and energy use indicators by sector. In addition, we prepare an <Energy Use Performance Report> containing major climate change-related issues, such as energy reduction activities and the status of development of reduction technologies every month, and conduct an energy meeting to report it to the CEO's technical office and the CEO.
Environmental Impact Management
Korea Zinc is making various efforts to reduce the emission of air pollutants emmited during the production process and to improve the air environment. The furnace facility is reducing nitrogen oxides by installing a Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction facility (SNCR) to reduce nitrogen oxides and introducing a new technology to remove nitrogen oxides by ozone oxidation. Pollutants emitted within the workplace are monitored in real time through the Tele Monitoring System (TMS) linked to the gas scrubber, and air pollution sources are stably managed through this. In 2023, we improved the accuracy of our emission measurements by installing 11 tele-monitoring systems (TMS) and eight composite odor and Sox measurement devices. Furthermore, we have implemented stricter controls on arsenic acid emissions by installing additional covers for stacks and local exhaust facilities.

Korea Zinc is doing its best to reduce
environmental pollution and build a resource
circulation ecosystem through an innovative
resource recycling approach.
Reinforcement of resource circulation within the process
Zinc, lead, and copper, which are representative products of Korea Zinc, exist only in the form of ore, and if only one product is produced, other metals other than the products of each process are treated with impurities, which not only lowers productivity, but also causes environmental problems due to impurities. To solve these problems, Korea Zinc organically integrates the zinc, lead, and copper smelting processes into one process, raising the recovery rate of various valuable metals to close to 100%, maximizing productivity and contributing to the improvement of environmental problems.
Strengthening resource circulation between industries
Steel Cycle Corporation and Zinc Oxide Corporation Vietnam (ZOCV), which are subsidiaries of Korea Zinc, use waste such as steel making dust generated in the production process of steel companies as raw materials to produce crude zinc oxide, which is a material for zinc smelting.
The steelmaking dust generated from the electric furnace is treated in a rotary hearth furnace (RHF) to produce crude zinc oxide containing valuable metals (zinc, lead, etc.) and by producing Direct Reduced Iron (DRI), a raw material for steel processing, and supplying it to other industries as a raw material, Korea Zinc not only reduces landfill waste, but also protects the environment by reducing mining demand.
Korea Zinc is making every effort to build an eco-friendly resource circulation ecosystem by reducing the amount of waste generated by applying an innovative method, processing waste generated in other industries and supplying it as a raw material to other companies. Korea Zinc is committed to complying with domestic environmental policies and international ESG trends.
Efforts to build a resource circulation network
Korea Zinc is taking the lead in building an eco-industrial complex that aims for Zero Emission through a resource circulation network with nearby companies.
- Korea Zinc is supplying process by-products as raw materials for nearby company A.
- The CO2 gas emitted into the atmosphere is supplied to the raw material production facility of Company B nearby, and process heat generated in the process is recovered and converted into steam and supplied as an energy source to Company B, as well as waste high-temperature condensate generated from steam. We are realizing a complex resource circulation network that recovers and reuses in the process.
